Beauty Fairest Of Them All?

Leading dermatologists and plastic surgeons told People magazine which celebrities their patients most want to look like – piece by piece. It seems Beyoncé Knowles’ lips (full and pouty); Nicole Kidman’s skin (pristine); and Catherine Zeta Jones’ eyes (sexy) are in demand.

Dr. Francis Palmer, co-director of facial plastic surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, uses a mathematical formula to determine “true beauty.” Cheeks account 75 percent; they should be abroad, rounded and low. If you draw an imaginary line from your pupil toward your jaw and another from your nostrils across your cheek, the bottom of your cheekbone should fall at, or below, the intersection of these lines.
Eyes and eyebrows count for 10 percent. Lids should be nicely arched and be a pinkie-width above the rim of the eye socket. Read more!

Tooth Whitening Techniques In A Face-Off

Advances in tooth-whitening technology are making it easier to have a brighter smile. But what’s the best at-home system – tooth whitening strips or custom-made trays?
In a recent study, researchers compared the safety and effectiveness of a strip-based 14 percent hydrogen peroxide gel product (Crest Whitestrips Supreme) with customized tray whitening systems using a 16 percent and 20 percent carbamide peroxide gel (Nite White Excel). Participants wore the strips on their upper front teeth for 30 minutes twice a day for three weeks. Tray users wore customized trays with the whitening solution overnight for nine days to two weeks.

The studies revealed that strips, the less expensive option, whitened teeth better and with fewer side effects than the trays. In fact, strip users experienced a 91 percent improvement in yellowness reduction compared to tray users. Read more!

Secrets For Beauty Nails

Some people are born with brittle nails, and others’ lose strength as they get older, but experts are unsure exactly why this occurs. And while nails need certain vitamins, minerals and protein, most people get the essentials from their diet.
But there are simple things you can do to keep your beauty and healthy nails :

Avoid wraps and artificial nails. While wearing them doesn’t make nails weak, peeling them off does; it removes layers of natural nail.

Use polish remover no more than once weekly. All polish removers (even the non-acetone variety) contain strong solvents that can dry out nails if used too frequently – particularly if yours are already fragile. Read more!

New Eczema Treatments

Experts led by the University of Dundee have discovered the gene which causes dry skin, leading to eczema and asthma. The gene produces the protein filaggrin, which helps the skin form a protective outer barrier.
Experts hope to use the discovery for more effective therapies to tackle the root causes of the conditions, rather than simply treating the symptoms.
At the moment the only treatment is through the use of emollients and ointments or anti-inflammatory drugs. The research, to be published in the journal Nature Genetics, was undertaken with collaborators in Glasgow, Dublin, Seattle and Copenhagen.

Filaggrin, abundant in the outermost layers of the skin, keeps bacteria and viruses out while keeping water in to prevent the skin from drying. Reduction or absence of the protein leads to dry and flaky skin. Read more!

There’s More to Good Looks Than Physical Beauty

Result of three studies examining the influence of non-physical traits on perception of physical attractiveness have revealed that physical appeal is perceived differently when looking at someone you know vs. a stranger.
Based on earlier studies, attractive physical traits include bilateral facial symmetry and ideal waist-to-hip ratios. But those studies only rated features seen at a glance; they overlooked non-physical traits that influence perception over time. And while it’s known that animals and people are attracted to those they see as “fit” relevant to survival and reproduction, in humans, the “fitness value of potential social partners depends at least as much on non-physical traits– whether they cooperative, dependable, brave, hardworking, intelligent and so on– as physical factors,” says co-author Kevin Kniffin, University of Wisconsin.

In the first study, participants rated people based on high school yearbook photos; one yearbook belonged to each participant. Read more!

Summertime Skin Secrets

Whatever your skin type, there are things you can do to protect and care for it during the warm weather. Women with oily facial skin should know that heat and humidity can double the amount of oil produced; sun exposure makes the oil thicker and more likely to clog pores.
Leave your cleanser on for an extra 10-15 seconds before rinsing and follow with an astringent. For the rest of your body, choose a daily wash with salicylic acid and exfoliate twice a week with a salt or sugar scrub. Avoid sunscreens with an SPF higher than 30 because the formulas tend to be very emollient. And look for a gel formula labeled “physical block” (titanium oxide or zinc oxide) rather than “chemical block” (rarely oil free).

If you have dry skin, exfoliate more frequently. If your skin is flaky, see a dermatologist to rule out a yeast-induced rash common in summer. Read more!

Women Hormones Period And Skin Care

Your cycle begins on the first day of your period and can last anywhere from 21 to 40 days. In the first week after your period, your oestrogen level increases, helping to keep skin clear (oestrogen is the hormone that helps keep oil glands in check). When ovulation occurs around day 14 of your cycle, progesterone (another hormone) starts to surge and your potential for acne blemishes increases and peaks, just days before your period. That is when you will experience oily skin and acne breakouts.

Keeping skin acne free requires more than just diligent skincare. It is also a matter of timing your skin care according to your monthly hormonal surges. That is because monthly hormone fluctuations stimulate the skin’s sebaceous glands to secrete oil. The more oil our skin produces, the higher the possibility that acne problems will arise.
