Your head-to-toe guide to good health. Remember what your mother said about carrots being good for your eyesight? She was right. “Not only are smart food choices vital for overall health and well-being, but certain nutrients can actually target and protect specific parts of your body,” says author of the health book. From your hair to your heart to, yes, even your private parts, the following nutrients will help keep every inch of you going strong.

1. Skin
What you need: Vitamin C
It helps the body make collagen (which keeps skin firm) boosts oxygen flow to the skin and helps heal scar tissue, cuts and bruises.

What to eat:
At least 75 milligrams per day. Good sources: 1 cup of cherries (10 mg), a grapefruit (44 mg) or a small papaya (94 mg).

2. Eyes
What you need: Beta-carotene
This vitamin acts as an antioxidant, breaking down cancer-causing chemicals that may damage eye tissues, and helps prevent macular degeneration and and cataracts, according to a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

What to eat:
Brightly colored vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli and yams. (Aim for 6 milligrams a day). A sweet potato has 15 mg.

3. Nails
What you need: Biotin
Studies have shown that this B vitamin (known as B7 or vitamin H) helps correct dry, brittle nails by increasing their ability to absort water, explain a professor of dermatology at Colombia University. Biotin also helps the body metabolize protein, which is vital for repairing and rebuilding healthy nails.

What to eat:
Thirty micrograms of biotin, found in protein-rich foods including eggs, fish, milk, chees, whole-grain cereals, cabbage and potatoes. Aim for one serving at every meal.

4. Teeth an Gums
What you need: Calcium
This mineral keeps your pearly whites strong and perhaps even disease-free. In fact, research shows that women ages 20 to 39 who get less than 800 milligrams of calcium a day have a 27 percent greater risk of periodontal disease.

What to eat:
Six ounces of almonds, 2 cups of white beans, or an 8-ounce glass of milk will provide you with about one-third of the recommended daily amount of 1,000 mg.

New research suggests that broccoli can prevent the damage from ultraviolet light that often leads to skin cancer. And, as many children would surely appreciate, you do not even have to eat it. The research suggests that people who lather themselves with an extract of broccoli sprouts are protected from the skin damage associated with ultraviolet radiation.
The results in human volunteers, backed by parallel evidence obtained in mice, show that the degree of skin redness (erythema) caused by UV rays, which is an accurate index of the inflammation and cell damage caused by UV radiation, is markedly reduced in extract-treated skin.

According to the findings, unlike a normal sunscreen, the extract did not absorb ultraviolet light to prevent it entering the skin. Instead, it worked inside the body by boosting the production of enzymes that protected cells against ultraviolet damage and the risk of skin cancer.
“The treatment could decrease the long-term risk of developing cancer,” Talalay wrote in the latest edition of the ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ journal.
Dr. Paul Talalay of Johns Hopkins University says in a statement “this chemical extract is not a sunscreen. Unlike sunscreens, it does not absorb UV light and prevent its entry into the skin. Rather, the extract works inside cells by boosting the production of a network of protective enzymes that defend cells against many aspects of UV damage. Consequently, the effects are long-lasting; the protection lasts for several days, even after the extract is no longer present on or in the skin.”

The research team exposed areas of skin to intense ultraviolet light one to three days after the broccoli sprout extract was applied to some areas. Spots treated with the extract had, on average, 37 per cent less redness and inflammation — key measures of future skin cancer development.

Although they don’t refine your skin as well as skin brushing does, body exfoliators and scrubs certainly help keep your skin smooth.
These are typically cream-based products that contain granules or beads designed to dislodge and lift off dead cells. They’re great for clearing some of the skin’s superficial dryness and giving the skin a polish. Unlike skin brushing, which is done before you shower, you can use them while showering. All you need to do is massage the exfoliator over your body and let the product do the job. Concentrate on areas that tend to be drier, such as your knees, elbows and around your ankles and feet.

When choosing a scrub, steer clear of ones that contain rough or sharp granules since they’re likely to scratch your skin as you scrub. Also, only ever use a scrub that has granules you can easily feel. If they’re too small, you’ll tend to massage harder in an attempt to get a better result and this could actually do more harm than good.

If you’re planning to use a self-tanning product, make sure you dry brush and/or use an exfoliator or scrub several times first.
The ideal way to look after your skin is with a combination of brushing and polishing. The more you make the effort to do so, the more you’ll become addicted to how great your skin is. There are lots of different products and methods you can use to exfoliate your skin. There are creamy scrubs, oil- or sugar-based products, soaps that contain granules, gloves, loofahs and buffing cloths. There are even body washes that contain exfoliating granules so you can do the two things at once.

Step Three
Okay, so now your skin feels soft and smooth after brushing and/or polishing. The next step is to nourish and protect those fresh new cells you’ve exposed by applying a body moisturiser. And although you only need to exfoliate once a fortnight, you need to moisturise daily to preserve that new skin.

WHEN leading skin care and makeup company Clinique made its debut in 1968, the cosmetics brand altered America’s beauty landscape by using scientific language and clinical iconography at a time when highly perfumed, elaborately packaged creams dominated department stores. Through laboratories in the United States, Europe and Asia, and thanks to countless academic, medical and research relationships, Clinique is able to bring the best that science has to offer to our customers. Now Clinique has gone one step further in aligning itself with therapeutic imagery — and in the process has raised the ante for beauty companies seeking affiliations with doctors.
They announced the opening of the Clinique Skin Wellness Center by the Department of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College

The Clinique Skin Wellness Center will be directed by Dr. Richard Granstein, Chairman of the Depertment of Dermatology at Weill Cornell. It will exist to “advance the understanding of skin from clinical, scientific and cosmetic points of view.” Visionary in its concept, the Clinique Skin Wellness Center at Weill Cornell is both a physical space for patient services and education as well as a “center without walls” that fosters joint research, education and outreach programs.
“This center is both a physical space for patient services and education, as well as a center without walls that fosters joint research and outreach programs,” Dr. Granstein said. “Both Clinique and Weill Cornell are focused on addressing skin care from all apsects.”

At the clinic, made up of examination rooms and a workstation, doctors will conduct skin examinations, with a particular focus on educating patients on how to prevent skin cancer and maintain skin health. Patients at the center may also make on-site appointments with Clinique representatives to learn about makeup that can cover skin redness or facial scars. “Skin consultations and education are at the core of how Clinique approaches each and every person who comes to our counter,” says Lynne Greene, Global President of Clinique. “At our very roots we believe in the power of dermatological advice and the Clinique Skin Wellness Center is the next step in providing the best that skin science has to offer.”

At a time when some doctors in private practice can earn six-figure consultancy fees from the makers of facial injections or wrinkle creams, Weill Cornell’s alliance with a cosmetics firm, critics say, has the potential to further diminish the stature of academic medicine as an unbiased authority and give the impression that dermatology is for sale to the highest bidder.
“I think the image of our specialty is particularly tarnished by myriad physicians hawking their own eponymous skin-care products and by academic departments appearing to sell their names to beauty companies,” said Dr. Amy E. Newburger, a dermatologist in Scarsdale, N.Y. In an editorial last month in the Archives of Dermatology, Dr. Newburger and Arthur L. Caplan, chairman of the medical ethics department at the University of Pennsylvania, warned medical schools away from alliances with beauty companies.

1. Alcohol
Alcohol’s dehydrating effects on the skin are well documented - it appears dry, with more lines and wrinkles. Alcohol also causes vasodilation, in which blood vessels become dilated, resulting in increased redness and irritation.

2. Caffeine
Even one strong cup can have a dramatic effect on your hydration status, so if you love your coffee, don’t forget to have a water chaser. Be careful with these new energy drinks, many of which have two to three times as much caffeine as coffee. Dehydration causes the skin to look dry, wrinkly and dull.

3. Saturated fat and trans fatty acids
Saturated fats, found in fatty meats, full-cream dairy products and coconut, and trans fatty acids, predominantly in hydrogenated oils, increase the production of free radicals, which accelerate the ageing process.Found in many takeaway foods, these fats may also play a role in initiating inflammation, puffiness and pimples.

4. Cigarettes
Nicotine increases blood-vessel constriction, creating a dull skin tone and is believed to reduce our vitamin C supply.

It seems everybody today wants whiter than white teeth. All the celebrities have them, and film stars seem to have had them forever. Most people rely on a quarterly painless cleaning by their dental hygienist and the rest of the time they use extra whitening toothpaste. Those who are really keen for the brightest teeth go for cosmetic dentistry. This is something that is particularly popular in places like Beverly Hills, and cosmetic dentistry is becoming big business.

Yet another way that people achieve extraordinarily white teeth is through the use of dental veneers. People with money to spare will often do this if their teeth are badly stained or discolored. Small strips made from either porcelain or plastic are made to cover your teeth and makes them look even whiter than God intended. These covers are known as dental veneers.

Top-notch cosmetic dentists are already on the bandwagon and if you search on the net you will find Beverly Hills veneers, Los Angeles veneers or Orange County cosmetic dentists. These dentists and dental technicians offer everything from the smallest strips to correct slight imperfections, to full porcelain caps for the whitest teeth ever.

Porcelain veneers are quite expensive and these are the kind most often found in celebrity dental clinics. They can cost thousands of dollars but your teeth will retain their whiteness for ten to fifteen years. It takes a number of appointments with a cosmetic dentist to have these fitted because they are molded to fit over your teeth.

The other type of veneers that you can get are called composite or direct veneers, but even these can cost several hundred dollars a tooth. Each veneer is applied separately and directly to the tooth so that this form of veneer can be done at one single appointment.

Getting veneers on your teeth can be a painful process as well as being expensive – however, if you want really white teeth and don’t have the time or the patience to keep up with it then they are an alternative worth considering. If you can afford them, veneers will cover discolored or badly stained teeth and the effects will last for years. A lot depends on how concerned you are about the whiteness of your teeth and how much money you have to spend.

At the moment veneers would be out of reach of most people’s budgets so it looks as though the sales of extra whitening toothpaste will not suffer too much.

For some people, getting back acne is not as bad as getting facial acne. After all, skin imperfections on one’s back is easier to hider under a layer of clothing - unless he or she has to wear a swimsuit to spend time at the beach or pool. In such cases, back acne can cause feelings of self-consciousness; no matter how attractive a person’s body is, having zits or pimples on one’s back can be disconcerting, not to mention uncomfortable.

The causes of back acne - or “bacne” - are pretty much similar to what causes pimples to emerge on other parts of the body. The back is filled with sebaceous glands, which secrete a kind of oil called sebum. If excessive amounts of this oil are produced and not removed immediately, the pores and the hair follicles on a person’s back will become clogged, which then encourages bacteria to attack and inflame skin tissue. Back acne is the result of this.

It is then very important to make sure that one’s back is kept clean and free of dead cells in order to prevent back acne. Regular bathing and exfoliation is important. It is also advisable to keep the skin free from perspiration; wiping one’s back dry after strenuous activity or changing a sweat-soaked shirt as soon as possible would discourage pimples on the back from forming.

Anecdotal evidence suggested that the pressure and chafing that results from wearing tight clothing or carrying heavy backpacks can contribute to back acne. Perhaps it would be best then to wear looser-fitting clothes at least some of the time, or try alternating the use of backpacks with other types of bags - those that do not put weight or pressure on the back. A person does not have to totally give up wearing tight clothes or using backpacks; he or she just has to learn to balance them with the use of other objects to minimize the risk of getting back acne.

Mild cases of bacne can be treated with over-the-counter medications and other skin care formulations. Some of these medications contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Those interested in natural back acne remedies may try using soaps, creams, and ointments that contain ingredients such as tea tree oil, neem, and basil. These herb extracts are beneficial for those suffering from nearly all types of acne because they have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties. In addition to helping treat pimples, they can also restore the skin’s suppleness and smoothness.

More severe cases of back acne, or infected pimples that have developed into pustules or cysts, will require the specialized care of a dermatologist or other skin specialists. Left untreated, these blemishes will develop into deep and unsightly scars that may be permanent. Taking measures to prevent and treat back acne is always in your best interest; your skin will look and feel good, and your back will thank you for it.

If you spend a lot of time on the computer, don’t disregard these possible indicators of eye strain: burning and watering eyes; blurred or double vision; visual fatigue; headaches; and the need to change your eyeglass prescription frequently.

Eye strain is becoming increasingly common among computer users. Why? Because there is a basic problem with the “prolonged” viewing of computer monitors and other display screens. The prevalence of this condition has even necessitated a term called Computer Vision Syndrome (or C.V.S.). As defined by the American Optometric Association, C.V.S. is “the complex of eye and vision problems related to near work which are experienced during or related to computer use. . . In most cases, symptoms occur because the visual demands of the task exceed the visual abilities of the individual to comfortably perform the task.”

Causes of Computer Eye Strain
In many cases, visual fatigue or eye strain result from poor screen contrast or glare from strong light sources (e.g., sunlight or high intensity lamps), reflecting off the display screen.
Another cause of eye strain has to do with the necessity of subtle but continual re-focusing. For instance, when one has to regularly switch the gaze between a screen and a document holder that is set a little farther away. Additionally, imperceptible flickers in screen characters and images are also culprits in the dynamics of constant re-focusing.

And oddly enough, a decrease in your blink rate has a lot to do with computer eye strain. It is said that the natural rate of blinks per minute should be about 22. However, when using the computer, the average person blinks approximately 4 times per minute. What a difference. The lower blink rate causes eye moisture to evaporate, resulting in “dry eye.” Dry eye sensations include: burning, itching, blurring and heavy eyelids.

Five Ways to Combat Eye Strain While Using the Computer

Make Adjustments. Adjust your seating and the screen height so that while you are comfortably seated, your eyes are in line with the top of the monitor. You also need to re-position your monitor in order to avoid glare from windows or other light sources. Focusing on the monitor for a long time with full brightness can cause eye strain, so use the controls on your monitor to adjust the contrast and brightness to a comfortable level.

Place Your Reference Documents Strategically. If you use a document holder, try to position it as close to the computer screen as possible so that the reference materials and your screen are at the same distance from your eyes.

Repair or Replace the Monitor. Consider having your computer monitor repaired or replaced if it flickers or has insufficient clarity.

Take an “Eye Break.” You should stop periodically and exercise your eyes by looking away from the monitor and focusing on something in the distance. You can also rest your eyes by covering them with the palms of your hands for about 15 seconds at a time.

Blink! Make an effort to become more conscious of your blink rate. No, you don’t have to sit there and count your blinks, just be aware to blink regularly. And try to keep the air around you moist. Having lots of live house plants around or a room humidifier should do the trick.

While there is no evidence yet that prolonged computer use results in permanent eye damage, its just plain commonsense to avoid the discomforts and symptoms of eye strain and do all you can to preserve your precious eyesight.

Acne can occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Pimples include blackheads, whiteheads, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules).
There are glands in our skin which produce an oily substance called sebum. These glands are known as Sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are connected to a canal called a follicle. Follicle contains a fine hair. These sebaceous glands attached to hair follicles are most numerous on the face, neck, back and chest.

The oily substance sebum produced by the sebaceous glands normally empties onto the skin surface through the opening of the follicle, usually called a pore.

Cause of White Heads and Black Heads
The sebum, hair and the cells that fill the narrow follicle may produce a plug, which is an early sign of acne. The plug prevents sebum from reaching the surface of the skin through a pore.
The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria to grow in the plugged follicles. These bacteria produce chemicals and enzymes and attract white blood cells that cause inflammation.
When the wall of the plugged follicle breaks down, sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria gets spilled on to the skin thereby causing lesions or pimples.

Lesion refers to a physical change in body tissue caused by disease or injury. It may be external or internal. For example we cut our finger with a knife and it affects the body tissue and is an external lesion. If we have lung cancer the internal tissues are affected and it is internal lesion.

Acne is an external lesion because if affects the body tissue on the face, neck, back, etc. People with acne frequently have a variety of lesions. If the plugged follicle, stays beneath the skin, it is called a whitehead.

If it reaches the surface of the skin and opens up, it is called a blackhead.

Some Home Remedies for Acne Cure
Take some orange peels. Pound them with water and apply to the acne affected areas. Apply cucumber leaves or grated pieces to the affected area.

If you can get a fresh cut clove or garlic you can rub the pimple with it. You can also try face masks. Facial masks help tighten pores, remove excess oil and moisturize dry skin. You need to try different masks to find out which one suits you the best.

Mix equal parts clay and water into a thick paste and apply for 5 to 20 minutes.
Take the juice of tomatoes and lemons. Use a cotton ball to apply the juice. Wash after 10 minutes. Do this two times a day for 14 days. Grind to paste cloves, apply on face and leave overnight. Wash off next morning.

Grind fenugreek leaves to a paste, apply and leave overnight. Wash off next morning. Lavender kills germs and stimulates new cell growth. Steaming the face with lavender can be helpful.
Take distilled water in a pan. Put some red clover, strawberry leaves and lavender in it. Keep it simmering and hold your clean face over the pan with a towel over your head. Do this for 15 minutes, two or three times a week.

Dry eye disorders are common as we age and usually show up as gritty sore eyes that worsen as the day progresses. Closed eyelids as we sleep offers a recovery period but next day the whole annoying cycle starts over again. Current treatments are usually targeted at relieving symptoms of irritation with extra lubrication or punctal plugs that decrease tear outflow. Recently though our understanding of dry eye problems has improved dramatically. Better understanding of dry eyes problems helps lead to better diagnosis and newer treatment options that either prevent difficulties or reduce discomfort.

Age inevitably produces a gradual decline in our tear function. And there are two clear mechanisms involved. The first is decreased tear production from the primary lacrimal glands. This can happen because of autoimmune problems like arthritis or problems like diabetes which decrease eye sensitivity. The second is increased tear evaporation with reduced function of some of the glands in the lids called meibomium glands. Age and recurrent inflammatory conditions reduce the function of these glands which produce an essential “oily” layer. This layer sits on top of tears and slows tear evaporation. Reducing this layer causes tears to evaporate quickly causing the gritty dry eyes and the intermittent blurry vision usually seen.

In 2003 a scientific study showed that high dietary intake of the Omega-3 group of essential oils decreased the risk of developing dry eye disease. It has been known for quite some time that the American diet is top heavy in Omega-6 oils and lacking in Omega-3 oils. This study showed that improving the amount of Omega-3 essential oils seems to address an imbalance and decreases the likelihood of developing dry eyes.

What mechanism helps omega-3 essential oils aid dry eyes? The heart of it seems to be the known fact that the omega-3 group of oils decreases inflammation in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. It appears that they also help decrease inflammatory conditions that affect the eye. Reducing the effects of lacrimal gland inflammatory problems improves tear production, hopefully avoiding dry eye disorders such as Sjogren’s syndrome. Tear evaporation is reduced by decreasing inflammatory problems affecting the meibomium glands such as blepharitis and acne rosacea. An interesting third factor is that omega-3 essential oils actually seem to be some of the active ingredients in producing a healthy tear film oil layer.

Tools such as extra lubrication and punctal plugs will still be needed to treat dry eyes with significant discomfort. Our improved understanding of the natural history of dry eye will allow however for the future use of alternative treatments such as dietary supplements. Omega-3 dietary supplements have already been shown to be essential nutrients in other health areas, now we know that they are also the “good oil” for dry eye management.

The need to glow all year round has become a prerogative for the image conscious modern woman or man for the matter. Skin cancer campaigns against the sun has seen the multitudes of health conscious turn to indoor tanning as an alternative to gaining the exquisite, glowing skin sported by the much envied Brazilian and Caribbean bombshells gracing catwalks and television screens.

The popular websites comments on the rising trend of indoor tanning, quoting 68% increase in sales for the tanning industry in America alone. However there are drawbacks to indoor tanning with the most problematic being the financial drawbacks and physical side effects. Indoor tanning has been proven to be less harmful than the sun’s rays, but long periods of exposure age and dry the skin much in the manner of sun tanning, and the long and frequent sessions provides a sizeable dent in consumer pockets.

Indoor tanning lotions are the industry’s solution to this dermatological dilemma. Tanning bed lotions are engineered to maximize the results of tanning sessions. These lotions contain essential nutrients necessary for creating a deep natural-looking tan. While seemingly expensive, tanning lotions actually save time and money by providing a better tan in fewer sessions.
Indoor tanning lotions also come packed with moisturizing ingredients. Moist skin tans faster and more efficiently than dry skin resulting in a better tan in fewer weeks. Furthermore active ingredients supplement the skin’s cells with the same proteins that enhance the tanning process naturally. The main active ingredient in tanning lotions is Tyrosine which produces melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for causing skin to darken. Tyrosine is added to supplement the body’s normal level of tyrosine at the skins cell level thereby speeding the tanning process and preserving the tan for longer periods.
Indoor tanning lotions also help counteract the drying effects of heat and light associated with tanning and keep skin supple, young and healthy. The latest dermatological technology in indoor tanning lotions includes oxidants that prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
The debate over safety of indoor tanning rages on however, the benefits of indoor tanning are tipping the scale in favour of affirmative.

A class-action lawsuit filed last March in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges that five major U.S. makers of sunscreen lotion falsely tout that their products are waterproof and offer protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Neutrogena, Coppertone, Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic and Bullfrog are the sunscreen makers, argue they have not changed their labels because the Food and Drug Administration has not enforced the standardization of all sunscreen labels, which was proposed in 1999. Under new regulations, manufacturers cannot include misleading terms, such as “waterproof,” “sunblock,” “all-day protection” and “visible and/or infrared light protection.”

When you are exposed to the sun and sunlamps, your skin color changes because it’s protecting itself from damaging ultraviolet rays. These UV rays can cause sunburn and over time may lead to blemishes, wrinkling, cataracts and other eye problems, skin cancer and a weakened immune system, the institute reports.
Sunscreens generally do a good job filtering out the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn — UVB rays. But with sunburn protection, many people get a false sense of security that keeps them under the harsh sun much longer. That adds to the risk of eventual skin cancer — both deadly melanoma and the more common and less-threatening basal and squamous cell cancers.

Some people blame sunscreen makers that promise broad-spectrum protection, which means it is supposed to provide a shield from UV-A and UV-B rays. However, most sunscreens only protect against UV-B light, which only guards against basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Studies show most sunscreens do not protect against melanoma.

More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year and we need to being proactive about learning ways to reduce the risk. As recently lawsuit against sunscreen manufacturers, some people asking what sunscreen do to protect our skin health and what should they do to reduce sun skin cancer risk.

Actually, most of skin health patients know the basics about sun protection. But Drs. Kay Judge and Maxine Barish-Wreden, medical directors of Sutter’s Downtown Integrative Medicine program, gives some facts that we may not know about sunscreen and sun protection.

• Most sunscreens have more UVB protection than UVA protection. To maximize your UVA protection, look for products with avobenzone, also called Parsol 1789.

• Think “shot glass” when applying sunscreen. Most of us apply too little sunscreen — we need 1 ounce or one shot glass full of sunscreen when applying it to the entire body.

• Clothes protect against the sun. The thicker the weave on your clothes, the better the sun protection. Cotton clothes have an SPF around 4, and cotton- poly blends can be around SPF 11.

• Sunscreens that carry zinc oxide or titanium oxide to help scatter the sun’s rays are very effective and relatively non-allergenic — making them a good choice for children and those with sensitive skin.

• Tanning beds are not safe alternatives. Self-tanners are a better option.

• Car windows do not provide sun protection. Studies have shown American drivers have more photo-damage on the left side and Australians on the right. UV-protectant film applied to your car windows can help.

As far as sunscreens, we do know that sunscreens may give you a false sense of security, causing you to stay in the sun longer than you normally would. The best way to avoid skin cancer is to minimize excessive exposure to the sun by avoiding it during midday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.), using hats and wearing sun-protectant clothing.
Sunscreen, however, remains an effective way of reducing sun damage when applied liberally and frequently (every two hours).
