Sunscreens, Not That Good?

Sunscreens Not That GoodA class-action lawsuit filed last March in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges that five major U.S. makers of sunscreen lotion falsely tout that their products are waterproof and offer protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Neutrogena, Coppertone, Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic and Bullfrog are the sunscreen makers, argue they have not changed their labels because the Food and Drug Administration has not enforced the standardization of all sunscreen labels, which was proposed in 1999. Under new regulations, manufacturers cannot include misleading terms, such as “waterproof,” “sunblock,” “all-day protection” and “visible and/or infrared light protection.”

When you are exposed to the sun and sunlamps, your skin color changes because it’s protecting itself from damaging ultraviolet rays. These UV rays can cause sunburn and over time may lead to blemishes, wrinkling, cataracts and other eye problems, skin cancer and a weakened immune system, the institute reports.
Sunscreens generally do a good job filtering out the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn — UVB rays. But with sunburn protection, many people get a false sense of security that keeps them under the harsh sun much longer. That adds to the risk of eventual skin cancer — both deadly melanoma and the more common and less-threatening basal and squamous cell cancers.

Some people blame sunscreen makers that promise broad-spectrum protection, which means it is supposed to provide a shield from UV-A and UV-B rays. However, most sunscreens only protect against UV-B light, which only guards against basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Studies show most sunscreens do not protect against melanoma.

    Importance of UVA protection

BEING SUN SAVVY IS A NOW A 365 DAY RESPONSIBILITY

If you thought you are burning easier these days, you are not alone! Years ago, the letters U and V meant not much more than two letters near the end of the alphabet. When used in conjunction with such words and phrases as Global Warming, Ozone Depletion and Melanoma, we began to see and make connections. Today, most Ultra Violet radiation or UV rays come in three varieties, UVA, UVB and UVC. The most damaging are UVC rays, which are absorbed by the stratospheric ozone layer. However, as the ozone layer depletes, there is an increased potential for UVC rays to get through.
The UVB rays do get through the atmosphere and burn the outer layers of the skin. They will penetrate and can be quite damaging. The UVA ray is the most abundant of the three and does penetrate beyond the top layer of human skin. Damage from UVA rays not only includes severe burning, but scientists and doctors believe the UVA ray is a risk factor in the development of cancers including squamous, basal cell and Melanoma. In the spring of 2006, Environment Canada scientists reported that UV levels would be about 4 times higher than pre-1980 levels. The culprit is primarily the depleting ozone layer. The report also stated that the ozone layer thinned by 5% and worsened to “7% below normal by early spring.”
There is increasing agreement in the scientific community that climate change is a contributor high-altitude ozone depletion. This years thinning trend will continue throughout the summer months but at slightly reduced levels. The comparisons are made against 1980 statistics when ozone depletion was first reported. So how do we protect against the possibility of sun damage? Over the years, a wide number of new sun block products have flooded the market as manufacturers scramble to develop the most effective sun protection. The industry standard for protection is the SPF designation, or Sun Protection Factor. Generally the higher the number, the more complete the protection. But so far, perfection has yet to be obtained. In late March 2006, a class action lawsuit was initiated in the United States. A number of manufacturers were in the process of being taken to task for marketing products that allegedly offer little or no protection against the more penetrating UVA rays. The suit says the manufacturers claim to generally protect users from ultraviolet rays. It recognizes that UVB rays might be stopped, but contends little is done concerning potential damage from UVA rays.
In 1992, a new weapon was introduced in the fight against UVA radiation. A French manufacturer developed a new ingredient for its line of skin care products. Since then, Mexoryl has been included in Canadian and European versions of La Roche-Posays Anthelios and Ombrelle sun block. Mexoryl SX has not been FDA approved as yet for sale in the United States. So now, more than ever, skin does need sun attention during the winter months especially while on the ski slopes, ice rink or snow shoe trails. Staying sun savvy is key to happier and healthier outdoor fun. So, keep the sun block handy 24/7, all year round and help keep those UV rays in check! (Daily weather and the latest UV index can be accessed at www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca. Mexoryl SX as found in Ombrelle and Anthelios by La Roche-Posay carries the registration and are available online at Feelbest.com)

I would recommend using an Australian Gold or California Tan SPF / Tanning Lotion. They are trusted names in the Tanning Industry. The SPF’s you find at the drug store are sub par and I am glad to see that there is a law suit to alleviate the issue. I posted this under another thread as well…I think people should know the difference between drug store SPF’s and professional tanning products.

he Aston Martin Rapide has had an uncertain life. It was first shown to the world back in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, since then it was put on hold by Ford (ex-owners of Aston) and then revived by David Richards (the head of the current consortium of owners).

Its amazing to see that Aston Martin has truly hit a new level in every respect. The DBS we drove in Gaydon recently, made us all realize that the brand is now more than capable of taking on the Italians and Germans - and beating them senseless.

Our spy photographer captured this Rapide mule undergoing winter testing in northern Scandinavia. Obviously the Rapide will look significantly different to the mule which is essentially a longer DB9. However it will share the DB9’s platform and V12 engine.

    Hi, folks
For the latest study, it was
The most common diseases associated with are chronic viral hepatitis, alcoholism, and ( scarring of the liver ). Moreover, chronic viral hepatitis is common in alcoholism, and both and alcoholism cause cirrhosis which usually precedes the development of cancer. Therefore, the contributions and interrelationships of , viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis in the development of liver cancer are complex. Despite the complexity, it is important to try to understand the contributions of each disease so that patients at highest risk for liver cancer can be targeted for . Theoretically, they also might be targeted with treatments that prevent the development of liver cancer, when such treatments are developed.
A practical study published in October 2007 has extended important the latest about the homogeneity of liver cancer to chronic viral hepatitis, alcoholism, and cirrhosis. This is a manly study owing to it used the records of Swedish health registries to discern patients for inclusion in the study. The Swedish registries consist of cleverness on the entire society of Sweden. They are hefty and whole registries and dominion been in avail for multifarious age. In materiality, they posses provided a treasure of score about rife diseases.
An analysis of the Swedish data demonstrated that among patients with alcoholism slick was slightly more than a coupled accrual in the risk of liver cancer in that compared with the general human relay. This insufficient development suggests that alcoholism alone is not strongly related to the development of liver cancer. On the other hand, patients who were alcoholics but also developed cirrhosis, presumably since a settlement of their alcoholism, had a 22 - commune aggrandizement in the risk of liver cancer in that compared with the general general public. Remarkably, the development of cirrhosis in alcoholics substantially increases the risk for liver cancer.
Patients with chronic viral hepatitis had a 34 - district greater risk for liver cancer because compared with the general humans. Patients with both chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis, however, had a much greater burgeoning in the development of liver cancer - - 118 - district. ( Presumably, the cirrhosis was caused by the chronic hepatitis. ) Decidedly, the combination of chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis has a exact well-made association with the development of liver cancer. This association is much stronger than the association of the combination of alcoholism and cirrhosis with liver cancer. The stronger association with viral hepatitis than alcohol supports a greater role for the hepatitis viruses through compared with alcohol in promoting liver cancer.
What can we conclude from this study ? Primeval, the risk of liver cancer is remarkably fresh in patients with chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis. The risk also is another in patients who are alcoholic and own cirrhosis, although the risk is less. Second, if we craving to substantially prevent the development of liver cancer, we duty spot patients before they evolve cirrhosis and accordingly prevent cirrhosis. Third, existing and newer techniques for liver cancer surveillance probably should be applied to all patients with both chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis and possibly to patients with both alcoholism and cirrhosis. Fourth,we need to develop better techniques for liver cancer surveillance. A satisfactory solution to the problem of liver cancer in chronic viral hepatitis and alcoholism will not be quick or easy.
    With all the best
    Steven
