Sunscreen For Skin Protection Unknown Fact
More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year and we need to being proactive about learning ways to reduce the risk. As recently lawsuit against sunscreen manufacturers, some people asking what sunscreen do to protect our skin health and what should they do to reduce sun skin cancer risk.
Actually, most of skin health patients know the basics about sun protection. But Drs. Kay Judge and Maxine Barish-Wreden, medical directors of Sutter’s Downtown Integrative Medicine program, gives some facts that we may not know about sunscreen and sun protection.
• Most sunscreens have more UVB protection than UVA protection. To maximize your UVA protection, look for products with avobenzone, also called Parsol 1789.
• Think “shot glass” when applying sunscreen. Most of us apply too little sunscreen — we need 1 ounce or one shot glass full of sunscreen when applying it to the entire body.
• Clothes protect against the sun. The thicker the weave on your clothes, the better the sun protection. Cotton clothes have an SPF around 4, and cotton- poly blends can be around SPF 11.
• Sunscreens that carry zinc oxide or titanium oxide to help scatter the sun’s rays are very effective and relatively non-allergenic — making them a good choice for children and those with sensitive skin.
• Tanning beds are not safe alternatives. Self-tanners are a better option.
• Car windows do not provide sun protection. Studies have shown American drivers have more photo-damage on the left side and Australians on the right. UV-protectant film applied to your car windows can help.
As far as sunscreens, we do know that sunscreens may give you a false sense of security, causing you to stay in the sun longer than you normally would. The best way to avoid skin cancer is to minimize excessive exposure to the sun by avoiding it during midday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.), using hats and wearing sun-protectant clothing.
Sunscreen, however, remains an effective way of reducing sun damage when applied liberally and frequently (every two hours).

I would recommend using an Australian Gold or California Tan SPF / Tanning Lotion. They are trusted names in the Tanning Industry. The SPF’s you find at the drug store are sub par and I am glad to see that there is a law suit to alleviate the issue.
